Scalp care is the new #hairgoals

How important is hair? Well, a large multitude of people from different cultures recognizes hair as an important reflection of their identity. Hair is a great and unique way to express who you are, but also what you stand for; it is a way to communicate your cultural heritage and your beauty, for both women and men. And the sales in hair care products supports these facts, with a market size growth of more than 33% from 2017 to 2022 in hair care in India.

Beautiful hair is synonymous of healthy and shiny strands – thus, hair quality plays a vital role in one’s physical appearance and self-perception (Trüeb et al., 2018). But did you know it all starts from the roots of roots: the scalp. Studies have shown that a healthy balanced scalp is the key to healthy lustrous hair.

In a guide to healthy hair, Barrie L (2022) reports that an unhealthy scalp may result in
Hair loss
Itchiness
Overly sensitive scalp
Irritation from hair products
Over or underproduction of sebum

Expose to tropical weather and climate, the consumers living in South Asia are troubled with increased heat and sweat – leading to aggravating skin and scalp problems. Sweaty and greasy hair is unavoidable and the scalp in turn becomes prone to oil. The environment can also worsen sensitive scalp conditions, increasing scalp irritability and dandruffs.

The question for many consumers is how to combat the effects of these challenging weather conditions?

Proper hair care products may be the answer, and this includes the use of shampoos, conditioners, treatment masks, and hair oil. The hair care market in India has been growing positively for the past couple of years and is forecast to reach US$1.2trillion in 2022 (source: Economist Intelligence Unit, Mintel). But there is a growing for hair scalp solutions, believed to be the new skin care. In India, there has been a positive step in consumers embracing scalp treatment, with 38% of consumers adding this to their haircare routine (source: Mintel). In the Asia Pacific region, from 2019 to 2021, a 0.2% jump in the percentage of hair care products in scrub format (source: Mintel) (Figure 1) signals that scrub formats in hair care are slowly growing, and brands are also adapting to this change.

Previously we identified the conscious consumer as one of the three key trends in the Personal Care industry. This group of consumers shines through their movement of going beyond clean formulations to embrace elements like positive impact and environmental friendliness.
